SMSC

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Development at Emerson Valley School

At Emerson Valley School, we believe that nurturing the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of every pupil is at the heart of our ethos and curriculum. SMSC development underpins everything we do, helping our children to become well-rounded, responsible, and caring individuals who are fully prepared for life in modern Britain.

Spiritual development:

We encourage all our pupils to explore their own beliefs and values, as well as those of others, through classroom discussions, assemblies, and reflective activities. Opportunities for awe and wonder are woven throughout our curriculum, whether that’s through exploring the natural world in science, expressing creativity in the arts, or reflecting during mindfulness sessions.

Moral development:

Children at Emerson Valley School learn to recognise right from wrong and to understand the consequences of their actions. We promote honesty, respect, and fairness, and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour. Our behaviour policy, PSHE curriculum and regular circle time discussions help pupils to develop strong moral values and make positive choices.

Social development:

We place great emphasis on teamwork, cooperation and building positive relationships. Pupils are given opportunities to work collaboratively across year groups, take on leadership roles such as school council representatives or playground buddies, and take part in a wide range of clubs and community projects. These experiences help children to develop empathy, resilience, and effective communication skills.

Cultural development:

Emerson Valley School is proud to celebrate the rich diversity of our community. We teach children to respect and appreciate cultural differences through themed weeks, visits from local community members, and learning about different traditions and festivals. Our curriculum is enriched with opportunities to explore literature, music, art and history from a variety of cultures, fostering curiosity and a global perspective.

Through our commitment to SMSC development, we ensure that every child at Emerson Valley School thrives academically, personally, and socially, equipping them with the skills and values needed to succeed and contribute positively to society.
