Religious Education

‘RE is an important curriculum subject. It is important in it’s own right and makes a unique contribution to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils and support wider community cohesion.’ National Curriculum 2014

Intent

At Emerson Valley Schools it is our intention to offer pupils RE lessons about a range of religions to help children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other religions represented in Great Britain.

We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British Values, ensuring the children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to encourage creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, discussion and independence. We use Jigsaw planning with each unit designed around one key question linked to a religion. Content is taught in interesting and innovative lessons that allow children the experience of thought provoking lessons and the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements. Children are given the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways as well as written work.

Impact

Children are able to make links between their own lives and the those of others in their community and in the wider world, developing and understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life. Their progress is documented in Humanities books, with hands-on lessons and visits from religious people.
